Oakland Athletics Caught in Pennant Race with Rangers Mid-Season
Every Oakland Athletics fan in the world watched their team run down what was then the best team in Major League Baseball and take over first place from them. The A’s caught and passed the Texas Rangers for first in the American League West in a fashion that certainly made it look like they were going to keep it for a while. They even got out to a comfortable little lead for a game or two. Now as the Athletics lost two of three to the Seattle Mariners and the Rangers have won the first two of the series with the St. Louis Cardinals, the A’s know they have quite a fight on their hands.
It appears that the period of time during the season where the Rangers were leading everyone in everything was more their normal pace than the month where they had a losing trend and allowed the A’s to catch them. The Athletics are still playing good baseball though and pending the outcome of Sunday night’s rain delayed affair, could be tied for first on Monday morning still. One thing is for certain, the race for the AL West is alive and well and we aren’t even out of June yet. The only thing missing is for the other three teams in the division to all hit long win streaks and catch them.
Little bonuses like having an off day on Monday will do the A’s some good. It has been a tough road for them already and they have the Cardinals after the Rangers are done with them. Oh, did I mention the Cardinals were the current best team in baseball heading into the Rangers series? What are the chances they lose two series in a row? We shall see but I think the A’s need to make the absolute most of this week that includes two rare off days in the same week to get healthier and more rested. They apparently have a long hard fight ahead of them.
