Baltimore Orioles Top Prospect Dylan Bundy to Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The Baltimore Orioles are disappointed to find out that the organization’s top pitching prospect will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. Right-handed starting pitcher Dylan Bundy will miss the next year while recovering from the surgery, which will obviously derail his timing to get to the big leagues.

Bundy was placed in Triple-A during Spring Training after he posted a 1-1 record with a 1.13 earned run average, five strikeouts, six walks and eight innings in four appearances (one start). Unfortunately, he was never able to take the mound as he was shut down immediately once he began to experience right flexor mass tightness.

The 20-year-old’s first season as a professional baseball player occurred last year. He went 9-3 with an outstanding 2.08 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings over 23 starts. His stellar performance had numerous baseball experts declaring him one of the top prospects in the entire sport, including a No. 2 ranking by Major League Baseball.

Bundy has suffered several setbacks over the past couple months, with his latest coming this week. A revealed partial tear in his elbow ligament convinced Dr. James Andrews that Tommy John surgery was the only way to go. It is certainly disappointing for a rising star to endure this type of injury at such a young age. However, the good news is he should still be able to perform at a high level once he returns.

Bundy did get to see some time in the majors last season as a September call-up. He walked one batter and did not give up a single run in 1 2/3 innings in two appearances.
