The Cincinnati Reds are one of the top teams in the major leagues and I haven’t doubted that for a minute all season long. They are one of the best without a doubt with the hitting and the pitching to win chunks of games and certainly lots of series in a row. Lately however they have been on the losing side of things which tends to happen now and then. Even the best teams hit a losing skid here and there. The problem for the Reds is that it could not have come at a worst time.
While the Reds have been losing five of six games, the Pittsburgh Pirates have been winning nearly every single contest they are in. They are right on the back doorstep of the St. Louis Cardinals as the Reds seem to be fading into the distance of third place instead of fighting it out for second and first place. I have confidence that the Reds are plenty good enough to win a load of games and get right back into things at any point.
Mainly the issue right now is that the longer this losing trend lasts, the more time it will take them to make it up in the second half. They can at best hope right now for either team, the Cardinals or the Pirates to hit a losing skid of their own about the time the Reds come out of theirs. It still might take them the rest of the summer months to run down first place but they should be able to capture the wildcard if one of the other two teams falters slightly.
