5 Cleveland Indians Who Deserve to Play in 2013 MLB All-Star Game

I think the best way to describe the Cleveland Indians season so far is that they are stuck. They have made several little runs towards first place but just cannot seem to make it over the hump and catch the Detroit Tigers. They did survive the rush at them made by the teams directly behind them however. They are fighters and scrappers. Through several injuries to key hitters and pitchers they continued to fight their hardest to put their best game on the field every night.

Through the first half of the season it has been good enough for second place most of the time. They have the talent getting healthy to make a run at the Tigers without a doubt and you cannot make a run at a great team like them without a bunch of all-star caliber players. Some might not have been as visible as other but the list of players I have here includes what I believe to be the very best the Indians have offered the American League this season.

Injuries have played a key role as I believe Michael Bourne would likely be on this list of five if he had remained healthy. The ones that are on here have stayed healthy for the most part and have produced for the Indians when they needed it most. That makes them all-star material in my book without very much doubt at all. If you disagree or have another addition to make to the list, feel free to leave a comment.

5 – Michael Brantley – LF

Brantley is more of a quiet leader on this team but his .278 average and 16 extra base-hits speak to his ability to produce plenty well enough to be considered for all-star level recognition. He should be there but it might be a hard fight to get him there.

4 – Carlos Santana – C

Santana has 10 homers and has driven in 32 RBI but what he is probably best recognized for this year is his strong arm and his .995 fielding percentage. There is room for a good or great defensive catcher on the all-star team and Santana should be that guy.

3 – Mark Reynolds – 3B

Reynolds has 14 homers and 44 RBI. The majority of the time when he drives in runs or homers a big blast it seems to be in the biggest moment possible. Without a doubt he has a feel for those clutch hits that are so important during the season. He is all-star material.

2 – Justin Masterson – P

Every pitching staff needs a strong ace starting pitcher to serve as the anchor for the entire staff and a rock for the team to build on. Masterson’s 9 wins have accomplished that for the Indians this season and his 3.76 ERA is all-star worthy as well.

1 – Jason Kipnis – 2B

If you looked for the mid-season MVP for the Indians to place on the all-star squad, Kipnis would be that guy. Though Reynolds has more production in a category or two, Kipnis has been on fire just when the Indians have needed him and he deserves to be in the all-star game for sure.
