Max Scherzer Deserves All-Star Start; Prince Fielder Does Not
There is a lot of talk about which players from each team deserve the nod for the MLB All-Star Game. More than that, the official sites of each MLB team is pushing for every player on that team to get enough votes to be a starter. I know it is marketing but I happen to disagree with the idea of pushing someone to start the All-Star game just by how many people visit the Detroit Tigers website.
Two popular ideas pushed there are that Max Scherzer and Prince Fielder should start for the American League in the big game. I both agree and disagree. Scherzer has definitely proved himself to be one of the best pitchers in baseball right now and should definitely get the respect he deserves by starting for the American League All-Star team. I couldn’t agree more and push it they should.
For Fielder I couldn’t disagree more. At the first base position there is little doubt that Fielder should be on the AL All-Star team but there is even less doubt who should start at first for the AL side. Baltimore Orioles Chris Davis has killed it all year long and continues to do so. I have no problem with Fielder being on the team and he should be given the respect of being directly behind Davis in the first base pecking order. His season has been great but not as great as Davis. Davis should get the starting nod, period. The official sites put marketing before baseball and I just tend not to like that.
