OK, enough is enough. The Detroit Tigers need to take Jose Alvarez out of the starting-pitching rotation, use him in long relief and find someone else to take Anibal Sanchez‘s place in the rotation.
Sanchez might take care of that himself by coming back from injury for his next scheduled MLB start. But Alvarez should not be a starter. Tiger fans have enough starters to worry about with Rick Porcello and Justin Verlander struggling.
They’ve lost six of seven for various reasons, but the Tigers aren’t getting the pitching they need.
Alvarez does not deserve another start after Monday’s 8-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He went on three full innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and walked three. His ERA is now 1-2 after four starts and in 19.2 innings, he’s allowed 12 runs and 21 hits. That’s unacceptable, unless there’s someone better in the bullpen to get batters out.
If that’s the case, then the Tigers are in for some real trouble. Thy can’t win many games with Alvarez and Porcello as two of their starters and with Verlander struggle.
The Tigers are battling with the Cleveland Indians for first place. The hitters aren’t exactly giving the pitchers much support. But that’s why the pitchers need to buckle down and get better.
Alvarez should either get sent back to the bullpen or the minors. He’s actually got good control, isn’t’ walking many batters and is throwing strikes. But he’s not getting the outs at critical times. Manager Jim Leyland has no business putting him in a starter’s role.
