The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently in first place in the NL West. However, every team in the division has a chance to over take them, and I believe each team is going to make a significant move before the trade deadline. Without a doubt, the Diamondbacks need a starter. In my opinion, they could use another power bat in the lineup — perhaps in left field.
Well, without a doubt, the best trade for this team to make is for Matt Garza and Alfonso Soriano from the Chicago Cubs.
The rotation for the Diamondbacks is led by Patrick Corbin and a ton of young pitchers like Randall Delgado and Wade Miley, neither of whom I think could carry this team to a world championship. Ian Kennedy hasn’t exactly been good over the last several starts, and this team is going to have to pitch if they’re going to get to the postseason.
Adding a quality arm like Garza (with playoff experience) would immediately bolster the rotation and give the D-Backs a two-headed monster heading into October. Garza’s power stuff with the efficiency of Corbin would give them a 1-2 punch that would be very difficult on opposing hitters. I also think Garza’s overall stuff would transition over to Chase Field quite well.
The trade market itself doesn’t have a ton of quality, impact arms on it, but Garza is one of them and the Diamondbacks should strike soon if they want to win.
Here’s the thing about Alfonso Soriano — he isn’t the same hitter he used to be, but he’s proven he can still hit the ball a long ways. He still has above-average power and would still give the Diamondbacks a presence in the order. Jason Kubel isn’t great on his own, but platooning Soriano and Kubel in left would give the Diamondbacks a stabilized lineup, with a guaranteed power hitter off the bench.
The Cubs have been willing to eat most if not all of the money Soriano has left, so I really don’t see it being a problem unless he vetos a trade. Killing two birds with one stone makes a ton of sense here.
What would the Diamondbacks have to give up? Well, how about a trade like this. Arizona gives up:
RHP Archie Bradley
SS Chris Owings
LHP David Holmberg
RHP Jake Barrett
OF A.J. Pollock
Cubs give up:
LF Alfonso Soriano
SP Matt Garza
LHP James Russell
At first glance, this looks like a monster trade, but this keeps the best pitcher (Tyler Skaggs) and best OF (Adam Eaton) in the organization. The D-backs would replace Holmberg with first-round pick Braden Shipley so they wouldn’t lose a ton of ground.
The biggest loss here is Chris Owings but when you’re getting a guy like Garza, you have to give up something pretty good himself. With Didi Gregorious developing, Owings could be expendable. With the Cubs throwing James Russell in the mix, it gives the D-Backs a quality left handed reliever which they also lack.
A trade like this could go a long way and frankly, this makes sense for both squads. We’ll see how serious the D-Backs are this year by the deadline. If they want to win? Pull the trigger.
