If you are a Cleveland Indians fan, chances are you are not very happy with the month of July. Things have not exactly gone as planned so far. At the end of June and the beginning of July the Indians actually had a half game lead in the division. Just four games into the month of July and they are as far back as they almost possibly could be considering their 1-3 record in the month. If they plan to give the Detroit Tigers a run for their money, they will need to do quite a bit better for the rest of the month.
Look at these numbers. They have been outscored by their opponents 28 – 18 while losing three of four games. They have gone from half of a game up in the American League Central to 2.5 games behind the Tigers just the few games we have seen them play this month. How disturbing is that trend since they now are facing the team they are once again chasing in a four game series.
Things don’t get much easier either. The remainder of the series will see the Indians face Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer in the finale of the four game set. I’m not saying the Indians can’t win those games but they had sure better get to scoring some runs and getting some clutch pitching from those starters. It would be a crying shame to have the lead starting July and be back by five or six games at the All-Star break. That is possible at the pace they are currently losing games.
I know as well as you do that the Indians are a good team and yes good teams go through struggles and losing streaks. This one could not possibly be timed any worse. Just after they took first place and now they have to scramble once again. Let’s see how they react with their backs against the wall for the rest of the series.
