Yankees Face Tough Challenge Against Chris Tillman

Baltimore Orioles starter Chris Tillman will be taking the mound against the New York Yankees this afternoon, and I think he’ll present a daunting challenge.

Tillman’s last win came against the Yankees on June 30. He went six strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking only two. That was his 10th win of the year, giving him the fourth most in the AL and putting him on pace to rack up 19 this season. He has easily been Baltimore’s best starter this year. He’s been pitching for the Orioles for four years, but this year has certainly been his breakthrough; his 10 wins already eclipse his previous career high of nine.

This could certainly be a challenging game for New York, especially with struggling lefty Andy Pettitte squaring off against Tillman. Pettitte is just 1-3 in his past five starts, and he certainly hasn’t looked as efficient as usual. I think that he should look to get the Orioles hitters to chase with his nice cut fastball, and to throw some change-ups. Baltimore is an excellent home run-hitting team, and they are always looking to jack one out. Throwing a few off-speed pitches or cutters might yield a few strikeouts.

The Yankees will have their work cut out for them today against Tillman and the Orioles. They need every win they can get, so let’s see if they pick up a tough one here.
