There has been a lot of talk about what pieces of the puzzle the San Francisco Giants need at the trade deadline to be able to climb back into the race in the National League West. Lately however there is at least one rumor going around that the Giants might have played themselves out of being buyers at the deadline. It appears that it is possible the defending World Series Champions could be sellers at the deadline.
A few names were thrown out but of course you can never be sure about these things until you hear something stable. One name that was intriguing to me was Tim Lincecum. The former Giant’s ace has had better years but still clearly has a lot of up-side left in his arm. Certainly for the short term he could be a factor in someone else’s pennant run if he were traded.
There is now way to know for sure but think about for a moment the value that Lincecum could bring back to the Giants if he were traded. I know a lot of people are probably thinking how nuts it would be for the Giants to trade this guy but he could be worth a lot more now than in a year or two if his game doesn’t pick back up.
For now the Giants could play a close hand on Lincecum and ask for a ton in return for him. That might not be the case in a year or two, just look at the case of the Philadelphia Phillies and Ryan Howard. I’m not saying the Giants are out of the race either. It is completely possible that they could trade away a big name or two and climb their way back into the race with what they get back. I think it is certainly worth considering.
