With their successful showing against the very difficult Pittsburgh Pirates, the Oakland Athletics found their way back to sole possession of first place in the American League West dogfight. That race is certainly not cooling down anytime soon with the Texas Rangers finishing up the season against the Detroit Tigers while the A’s take on the Boston Red Sox. Neither team will have an easy ride into the break, that’s for sure.
The A’s have a one game lead as of now. Both they and the Rangers have a tough series to end the first half. For the A’s to secure a sole first place position going into the All-Star break after having to chase down the Rangers for most of the first half would be a very strong statement to make. If they are able to get a series win against the Red Sox in the process, it would only make things magnified.
They must feel good with Bartolo Colon going on Sunday. The series sets up as well as one can against the first place Red Sox. It will not be easy but that goes for all the teams involved in both series. A lot is at stake for the Athletics and the Rangers but I look for the A’s to have an edge going into the break of at least two games. The key will be to hit the ground hot when the second half starts up. That shouldn’t be too difficult since most of the A’s got snubbed for All-Star festivities.
