Series Win over Nationals is the Message Philadelphia Phillies Wanted

Selling everything, who is selling everything at the Trade Deadline? Surely not the Philadelphia Phillies. For much of the last month or two the Phillies were being looked to as one of the big selling teams for the upcoming MLB trade deadline. As the time approaches however, it seems that the team isn’t so keen on breaking up their roster just yet. They will put a few out there but it seems they believe they have a chance to win this year. What in the world would make them think that?

Well, I cannot be sure but winning three of four from the hot second place Washington Nationals probably helped a little bit. Taking that series in the way they did really sent a strong message to the Nats and the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies are only 1.5 games back of the Nationals for second place now. While they are still 7.5 back of the Braves for first place, they have the feeling right now that they can compete.

That point becomes hard to argue when you glance at their recent series with the Braves. I think the Phillies have quite the point here and I am glad they are keeping some guys. Sure, there are going to probably be a few trades for them but instead of just wildly selling off their payroll it seems now that the Phillies are actually going to try to improve their team a little bit right now.

It is a really good sign for a franchise that has needed some fight for quite a while now. This all comes with big Ryan Howard on the disabled list. I wish it weren’t true but right now it seems that they are better off without him in the line-up. Someone is going to have to address that issue, either Howard or the Phillies, if they plan to compete until October.
