Boston Red Sox 8-7 Win Over Seattle Mariners Was Microcosm Of 2013 Season
I couldn’t be happier right now about the state of the Boston Red Sox. What’s not to like? Going into this season, the over/under on their wins total was 79.5. This is the Boston freaking Red Sox we’re talking about here. Sure, they had a bad season last year, but there’s just too much talent on this team to even have considered going under on that one.
Well, here we are with one more series in Oakland to go before the All-Star break. The Red Sox have the best record in the MLB after last night’s typical 8-7 extra-innings win over the Seattle Mariners. The game was a microcosm of the season as a whole. They were down 5-1, and 7-4, but they never gave up and came back to win.
And as usual, last night it was the players who led the Red Sox that made this such a typical victory. It was Daniel Nava, who had the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning off of Tom Wilhelmsen. Nothing new to see here, Nava’s been doing it all season. The fact that he’s not an All Star is a complete joke. It’s all good, though, sometimes its fun to root for unheralded players like Nava.
Koji Uehara did what he did all season: dominate. Without allowing a hit, the newest Red Sox closer struck out two batters and picked up his sixth save. And who saw the five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief from 28-year-old Steven Wright last night? The recent Pawtucket call up was brought in after Ryan Dempster was getting beat up. All he did was dance his knuckleball all over the plate and make the Mariners’ lineup look silly in the process.
Two years ago, the Red Sox were in a similar position as they are now. They had the best record in baseball and seemed to be an unstoppable force of nature. Then the infamous September 2011 collapse came. That won’t be happening this year. This team has better leaders and isn’t reliant on overpaid superstars with nothing to prove. It’s led by gritty players like Nava and Uehara, and guys that step up when they are called on like Wright. See you in October.
