There were few National League players more deserving of an All-Star spot than St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright. He has been the returning ace that the Cardinals needed to stabilize their rotation which has led to their dominating a great deal of the first half of the season. Any way you look at the numbers, Wainwright is a deserving All-Star. His only problem was that he was pitching on Sunday and thought he would probably sit the big game out. He wanted early on to have his replacement be the Cardinals closer Edward Mujica.

He got his wish and therefore some much deserved recognition quickly traveled to Mujica who has been an unsung hero for the Cardinals this year. He won the closer job and has compiled 26 saves and a 2.20 ERA over the first half. Any great team has to have a consistent closer and Mujica is that man for the Cardinals. Above all he is also deserving of an All-Star nod and the fact that Wainwright lobbied for him to get the spot he had speaks a great deal towards this team.

Getting selected to the MLB All-Star Game is most certainly an honor and for Wainwright to choose to be willing to sit it out if his teammate went is exactly what a team is built of. I think we all will get a good look at Mujica during this game but we also got a good look at the kind of guy and the kind of teammate Wainwright is. Moves like this are indicative of the term ‘leader’ and probably stem from the way Mike Matheny runs this team from the top. It’s also why the Cardinals will make a very tough team to beat.
