After last night’s win, the New York Mets have won nine of their last 14 games. This is definitely an improvement over the first half of the season. Behind excellent pitching from Carlos Torres, the Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1. Torres used more than his arm to earn his first win as a member of the Mets, smacking an RBI single as well as pitching six innings of one-run ball.

Torres has appeared in 12 games this season for the Mets, giving them quality innings. After the release of Shawn Marcum, a spot in the rotation is up for grabs. With Jonathon Niese on his way back, Torres must show the Mets he can deliver as a starter.

No spot is too big for the righty. Getting a start against one of the best teams in baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates and holding them to one earned run over five innings is great. To then shut down the NL East-leading Braves in his next start is amazing. Torres could be a key part in the Mets’ pitching plans for the future. He probably won’t be a starter, but could be a great reliever, which the Mets are in dire need for.

For now, Torres will stay up with the Mets club. Whether in the bullpen or the starting rotation, he gives the Mets another good arm.
