New York Yankees: Alex Rodriguez Goes From Dumb To Dumber

Alex Rodriguez

I thought it couldn’t get any worse for Alex Rodriguez as a New York Yankee than blatantly slapping the hand of Bronson Arroyo as he tried to tag him out in the 2003 ALCS — or screaming behind Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Howie Clark so that he could drop a pop fly.

But after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman suggested that Rodriguez “shut the f— up,” a month ago, it all seemed to go downhill. And things didn’t get any better as Cashman basically called him a liar yesterday.

“I spoke with Alex on the phone, and I asked him if he has any pain and he said, ‘I don’t,’” Dr. Michael Gross said via ESPN.com. “I said, ‘Do you have an injury?’ And he said, ‘I don’t.’ He said, ‘Would you be willing to say I’m ready to play?’ I said, ‘No, I’m not willing to say that. I’ve never examined you. I’ve looked at your MRI.’”

Yet, he still went on a mini radio tour and told the world that Rodriguez was ready to play. And if that wasn’t dumb enough, Gross seemed to forget about his own medical past, like when he was reprimanded for improper patient treatment involving steroids and hormones.

It’s no wonder why A-Rod became the butt of all self-imposed baseball jokes. Only he would choose to use a doctor with steroid implications while he’s in the middle of his own steroid investigation.

That’s the type of thinking that has always made this Boston Red Sox fan happy that we missed out on a $100 million mistake.

Sorry, Yankees fans. Maybe that lifetime ban will save you.
