Don’t look now, but a 14-6 record in July may have turned the Seattle Mariners from sellers to buyers at the trade deadline.

Sources at FOX Sports have reported that the M’s had “high-level” scouts at the Chicago White Sox/ Detroit Tigers game on Thursday to scout White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy.

Peavy has been heavily rumored to be traded at the deadline to teams like the Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals over the last couple weeks, but the Mariners?

Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young winner, is 7-4 this year with the White Sox with a 4.19 ERA. While Peavy hasn’t had a dominant season since he won the Cy Young Award with the San Diego Padres, he would be a huge upgrade to the middle of the M’s rotation as Seattle could finally stop the carousel that is the fifth spot in the rotation. With Peavy in the rotation, the Mariners starting group would look like this: Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Peavy, Joe Saunders, and Aaron Harang.

The Mariners have been putting up a ton of runs this month, scoring the most runs in baseball in July. Just 7.5 games out of a wild card spot, the organization is beginning to believe that this team could make a serious run at the playoffs, and Peavy would be a huge boost where the M’s need it most.
