Jake Peavy is the biggest name on the starting pitcher trade market right now. With only a few days before the MLB trade deadline many teams have been scouting his stellar pitching performances. Only a few have been said to be front-runners on the deal. Strangely enough, though they have said they would be quiet for the most part on trades, the St. Louis Cardinals have been mentioned as a top potential landing spot for Peavy.
Not that Peavy is a bad guy to go after, but this seemed surprising for a team that was to focus on minor moves if any. If the news mentioned by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is legit, it would mean the Cards had actually been looking at one major deal. Clearly a trade for one of the better veteran pitchers in MLB would never be considered a small deal. There could be a little friendly GM misdirection going on here but either way this is a huge potential boost for the Cardinals.
They are still playing quite well right now, a few games out in front of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The addition of someone like Peavy would make them even tougher to beat and seemingly create a monster of a team for the post-season. Imagine a five game series that starts with a team having to face Peavy and Adam Wainwright back to back. It isn’t something that is necessarily going to happen, but if they are front-runners on Peavy, a deal might seal the ultra competitive N.L. Central.
