Ever since Jake Peavy successfully made the jump off of the disabled list and back to all-star form, the rumors of a trade have been all over the place. The Chicago White Sox seem to be the team with the most to gain at the MLB trade deadline so their price for a trade is very high. That has narrowed the teams interested and the fact that they appear to be willing to pay almost none of Peavy’s salary narrowed the teams further. The Oakland Athletics appear to be at the top of the remaining teams.
At least according to some reports, the A’s are really interested in Peavy to upgrade their pitching staff. Supposedly they would rather do that than try to improve offensively. I think it is a great move as long as they don’t give up too much for Peavy. There is a little team control in his contract but it isn’t enough to give up a huge prospect or two.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says that the A’s would be unwilling to move Sonny Gray or Addison Russell and it is possible that Gray could be called to bullpen duty at the big league level if the Peavy trade goes through. All in all, however it works out this would be a huge trade for the Athletics.
Obviously Peavy is a better than average starting pitcher that would upgrade any rotation he is moved to. Everything about this could change rapidly as the final few days before the trade deadline usually move things along at a much faster pace. Right now it looks very possible that the A’s could be seriously going after a guy that would at least balance out the Texas Rangers’ upgrade of Matt Garza. We’ll see how it develops.
