Sometimes being a good MLB team is not good enough to win it all. That looks to possibly be the case this season with the Baltimore Orioles. They have been good and close to the top a time or two but just cannot put together the winning streaks needed to overtake the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. They will need something additional in order to be that good this year. There is no magic solution so they will need to get on the phone, pay more than they want and buy before the MLB trade deadline.
Rumor has it the Orioles are in talks with the Seattle Mariners about Michael Morse and Oliver Perez. Perez would be a good fit to bolster the bullpen but I’m not sure that is enough. In a perfect world they would be able to pull off that deal and a deal for a starter like Houston Astros’ Bud Norris. Though it doesn’t seem they have what it takes to pay the price, they might have to take a collection if they want to have a big impact deal done.
Of course the other side of the coin is that they don’t want to give up too much just for a chance to win this season. This is why GMs make good money I assume. There has to be a balance however and for my money I think they have to get something done in order to have a chance to win the American League East this season. If they do nothing at all their chances will really slack back unless current pitching really steps it up a few notches.
