Molina’s injury may force the Cardinals’ hands in a trade because of the injury. Tony Cruz or Rob Johnson is expected to fill the role if the Cardinals do not pull the trigger before the deadline.
Philadelphia Phillies‘ Carlos Ruiz, Chicago Cubs‘ Dioner Navarro and free agent Miguel Olivo are all possible options for the Cardinals to acquire. Navarro has been called the logical choice for the Cardinals. The Cubs have Wellington Castillo in the catcher role right now and have not used Navarro much since.
For now, Navarro would be a good trade target since the Cubs won’t ask for a lot back. St. Louis would not have to trade one of its top prospects in order to get Navarro, and he can be used as a backup once Molina gets back from his injury. If St. Louis traded for Ruiz, Philadelphia may want either Carlos Martinez or Michael Wacha for him, which will never happen.
Navarro has a .248/.311/.367 with 50 home runs and 229 RBIs over his career, and a 4.2 career WAR. He could definitely fill a situational role for the Cardinals in case Molina is out longer than first expected.
