Wheels are coming off St. Louis Cardinals as they Lose Sixth Straight
A lot of National League Central fans have been biding their time and waiting on the big August collapse of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now that we are right about to cross that threshold it looks like we could get an August collapse after all but it might come from the St. Louis Cardinals instead. They still technically have the second best record in the National League but they have lost all six games on their huge road trip and maybe their all-star catcher Yadier Molina.
For most of the year the Cardinals have not only had the best record in the National League but also in all of MLB as well. They have not faced the trying time they face now however and it does not look like they are responding well to the big road trip. They have now played six games and have lost them all, including going from first place to 1.5 games out in second place during a double-header sweep in Pittsburgh.
As if that weren’t enough, all-star catcher Yadier Molina left the game with a strained right knee. Anything bad happening to Molina would be a huge blow. He isn’t the top catcher in the National League for nothing. Everything and then some is now resting on the shoulders of ace Adam Wainwright who will go out and try to play the role of stopper tomorrow. There are two possible issues with that.
The first issue is that he was the one who started this streak by losing a duel with Atlanta Braves’ Mike Minor. Wainwright wasn’t quite as sharp as he usually is in that start but he will have to be on Wednesday. The second issue is that he faces budding ace Jeff Locke of the Pirates who has an ERA about 0.80 lower than his. It will not be easy but the Cardinals could give the ball to no one better than him
