Because of the way the season has gone for the Minnesota Twins, some probably assume they are in the cellar of the American League Central division. That isn’t actually true though, they’re in fourth place with the Chicago White Sox a nice distance behind them in last. They have way too far to go to think about catching anyone but the Twins could still prove a great deal going down the stretch of the 2013 season.
Their first big statement was made when they said they would not trade their closer Glen Perkins and then stood by it. They held on to what would have been a guy in the top two or three players on the market this year because they know they plan on winning next year. This is the Twins and that means they won’t necessarily do it like everyone else would but they have such a deep organization that they could get it done at any time. With a closer in place it certainly could happen as early as next year.
As they go down the stretch this year they certainly can prove quite a bit by winning series and winning games they maybe aren’t supposed to win. The next best thing to going to the post season is playing a hand in who does go by playing the role of spoiler. With the right streaks at the plate and on the mound, this Twins team could be on the short list of teams that contenders do not want to face in the final month of the year. Certainly with how close their own division is they could play a huge role in deciding who goes where.
