Can Detroit Tigers Sweep Series vs. Cleveland Indians?

Tonight might be one of the most important games of the season for the Cleveland Indians as they are on the verge of suffering a four-game sweep to the Detroit Tigers, and having their playoff hopes take a major blow. As of today, the Tigers have a six-game lead on Cleveland; but on the positive side of things for Cleveland, they only trail the Oakland Athletics by 2.5 games in the Wild Card chase.

Cleveland lost a heartbreaking one-run game last night that went 14 innings, with a two-run double by Tigers slugger Prince Fielder driving in the dagger that sealed things up for the Tigers victory. Last year’s Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera made his mark on the final outcome as he hit a go-ahead two-run home run that put the Tigers ahead.

The Tigers will be going for their 12th win in a row tonight, but they aren’t the only team riding a hot streak. The Atlanta Braves have won 13 games consecutively, and will be aiming for no. 14 when they take the field against the Miami Marlins on Friday.

In pursuit of a sweep, the Tigers will send out ace Max Scherzer who has been the team’s ace all season (sorry, Justin Verlander). This year, Scherzer is a remarkable 16-1 with a 2.85 ERA. He will pitch against Indians starter Zach McAllister, who has a 4-6 record to go along with a 3.47 ERA.

Obviously the Tigers have the pitching advantage, and that should be enough to carry the Tigers to their 12th win in a row, and to a sweep of the Indians.
