Wilmer Flores Continues To Impress For New York Mets

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Even in a season where the New York Mets have virtually no shot of making the playoffs, there have still been many things to root for if you are a Mets fan. First there was Matt Harvey, then Zack Wheeler, then Juan Lagares and now Wilmer Flores.

Flores is a player who scouts say has big offensive upside, but like second baseman Daniel Murphy, he cannot field a position up to par. Currently, Flores is doing an okay job replacing David Wright in the field at third base and at the plate, as Wright recovers from his hamstring injury.

Going into last night’s game, Flores was starting to impress the Mets organization and fans alike with his ability to come through with runners in scoring position. Last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks proved to be just another step forward for the rookie in only his fifth game. Flores added three more RBIs to his total of eight, while coming through for the second time in his three chances with the bases loaded thus far in his young career.

If Flores keeps up his offense and continues to shine in clutch situations, the Mets will find him a position to play whether he can field it or not.

Now, we can’t jump to conclusions just yet since his career is only five games old, but as a Mets fan, it is like a breath of fresh air seeing all of these young players like Harvey, Wheeler, Lagares and now Flores producing at the major league level and giving fans reasons to look forward, to at least for the next couple of years.
