Cody Ross was not necessarily thought to be the greatest outfielder to have played the game of Major League Baseball. He wasn’t really the best outfielder that changed teams during the 2013 off-season but he was supposed to have a much better season than he had for the Arizona Diamondbacks. A season where he has been down in nearly every major stat category has now ended in even worse fashion after he dislocated his right hip on the way to first base. The DBacks can only hope from here that things get much better for next year.
Ross’ homers were down to 8, his RBI at 38 and runs at 33. Each of those is a career low for him in has been just short of a full season. Obviously it is never a good thing to end a season on an injury but this one came at a really bad time. The team will not know the extent of the damage to his hip until later when the surgery is complete. The extent of the damage will contribute to how much time it will take the DBacks to get Ross back.

Unfortunately money matters in situations like this as well. On the money side of things the DBacks will be fine with their investment in Ross. He is under contract until 2015 with a team option for 2016. The deal maxes out under $10 million dollars so that is a pretty roster friendly situation. Ross should also bounce back to at least his previous form next season. Sometimes free agents have a down year after signing a new deal just like they have career years during a contract season. That was the case for Ross and I’m sure when he is healthy he will be more focused than ever to ensure a return to his form of 2012.
