The Colorado Rockies started a 10-game road trip Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles in Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
In their last 10-game road swing, the Rockies only managed one victory, going 1-9 in that stretch. Well, Colorado already got their first win out of the way last night in a check out our lumber kind of way. The Rockies morphed back into the Blake Street Bombers of old belting four home runs out of Camden.
If we do morph back to the 90s, Colorado fans all remember the original Bombers of Andres Galarraga, Dante Bichette, Larry Walker, Vinny Castilla and Ellis Burks. Last night, MLB was in for a treat when the new Blake Street Bombers arrived in that of Charlie Culberson, Wilin Rosario, Charlie Blackmon and the Toddfather, Todd Helton, who had another historic night.
The Rockies improved to 58-65 on the season last night. And, Juan Nicasio had a strong six-inning outing to improve his record to 7-6 overall. However, once again the Los Angeles Dodgers won making it nine-straight wins and one of the best 49-game stretches of baseball in 100-years with a 41-8 record for the club over the span. Colorado still finds themselves 14 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West standings, and 11.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card race.
As I mentioned in my article yesterday, it would be a miraculous feat for the Rockies to make the MLB playoffs this season. Well, one thing is certain, this club has absolutely no quit in them. Finding themselves down 2-0 to the Orioles in the fifth inning, Colorado began their offensive surge.
After a double by Rosario, Nolan Arenado drove him in with a single to right field. In the sixth, Culberson hit his first MLB home run into the left field seats tying the game 2-2. In the seventh, Rosario again delivered with a two-run blast to right. Then, in the eight-inning, Blackmon jacked a pitch deep to right which eventually landed on the street beyond the right field bleachers.
Of course, just when you thought the dinger fest was over, Helton golfed out a solo shot in the ninth. Not only did his home run give the Rockies a 6-2 lead, his blast kept pushing him up through the MLB record books with 362 home runs. This historic homer pushed him past Joe “The Yankee Clipper” DiMaggio for sole possession of 76th on the all-time home run list.
In addition, Todd’s jog around the bases jumped him past Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff for 97th all-time with 2,491 total hits in his storied career in Colorado.
Well, no doubt the Rockies brought some big lumber to Camden Yards on Friday night as each of the new Blake Street Bombers hit homers, giving them a total of four bombs on the night. Let’s hope their bats stay juiced as they once again face Baltimore Saturday night in the second game of a three-game series.
