Historic, dominating, and win machine can all be used to describe Max Scherzer this season. Cy Young may also be a term you can be using in a few months. Scherzer once again went out and did what he has done all season which is deliver the Detroit Tigers a win, and it was another big win for the Tigers taking three out of five from the Kansas City Royals all but dashing the Royals’ hopes of winning the AL Central.
For Max, he has quietly gone about one of the most historical seasons often being overshadowed by Miguel Cabrera. There’s no question, however, that Scherzer’s numbers stand alone and are as eye popping from a record standpoint as Miguel Cabrera’s are. 18-1 is like a record you fabricate off of a video game — even video games lose more times than once a season right? People are going to try to argue Yu Darvish for Cy Young. That’s well and good, but when you see 18-1 it not only speaks for itself, it yells for itself in a Fran Drescher voice that refuses to let you look away from it.
It has been an incredible season for Max Scherzer and there have been no signs that it is going to end any time soon. Scherzer hasn’t really had a horrible start all season long as even in his loss he pitched a very solid game. There will be questions about whether the Tigers can sign him long-term, but until those problems come up every Tigers fans should appreciate what they are witnessing out of Max Scherzer. Nobody’s perfect, but Max Scherzer is as close to it as a pitcher has been in a very long time.
