As well as the Texas Rangers have played since July coupled with the year-long struggles of the Chicago White Sox would suggest an easy time for the Rangers this weekend. They begin a three game series in U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. It will be a nice story because it is the return of Alex Rios and A.J. Pierzynski to Chicago. That might not be the biggest story however if the White Sox keep playing as well as they have of late.
The Rangers have won three straight coming into this series but the White Sox have won five straight and seven out of ten. They are playing as well as any team in the league right now and this series could provide them with their favorite chance yet of being spoilers to other team’s playoff positioning. The Rangers obviously are in a fight with the Oakland Athletics to hold on to that spot atop the American League West. That very well could be in jeopardy this weekend.
Because the A’s have been struggling as well, this could also be a huge chance for the Rangers to put some distance between themselves and their opponent for the top spot. I don’t pretend to know how it will all happen but the Rangers already have a losing record against the Sox this season, having lost two of three to them earlier in the year. With the A’s fighting like their backs are against the wall, the Rangers should hope that the struggling White Sox return for at least a few days.
