The Arizona Diamondbacks are still clinging to life in the playoff race, but the fact that they’ve had to deal with multiple injuries over the course of the season hasn’t made things any easier. In fact, injury woes are part of the reason they currently find themselves on the outside looking in on the National League playoff picture.
The Diamondbacks currently have two key pieces of their offense out, and have been for some time, while another out of their bullpen, in J.J. Putz, just went on the disabled list. Will the likes of Miguel Montero and Willie Bloomquist return to the Diamondbacks in time for the stretch run in September?
Both are currently rehabbing from their respective injuries. Bloomquist has missed time with a hand injury, in what has been something of a lost season for him. Montero has been out for the last month because of a back injury, but had been struggling before going down with the injury.
Montero and Bloomquist represent key players on offense for the Diamondbacks. Though they’ve managed to plate runs with the two out, there’s little doubt that each would provide a big boost for the offense in the final September stretch. Bloomquist is the type of guy that gets on base and helps create runs, while Montero is a major source of power for this team.
Of course, the latter there has struggled this season, and Wil Nieves has fared very well in his absence. But with Montero using the rehab time to make adjustments, he should fit right back into this lineup. The Diamondbacks will face decisions when each returns from their respective injury, but there’s no doubt that getting a couple of key offensive pieces will benefit this team heading into September.
Whether or not it’ll make a difference in determining their playoff fate, however, remains to be seen.
