Nothing against the Milwaukee Brewers but the Cincinnati Reds have to take them to town in a three game series like they had this weekend. The teams with a losing record are the ones that the Reds have to beat so they can make up ground when they are given the chance. The St. Louis Cardinals lost on Sunday and the Reds lost the chance to make up ground on them with a loss. Going into a week where they face the Cardinals in four games and the Los Angeles Dodgers in three, they really are going to wish they gained that game.
This is easily going to be one of the toughest and most important weeks of the season for the Reds. They have not played particularly well against either of their opponents this week and they are going to need to in order to stay in the race for the National League Central division. They still have a pretty good hold on the second Wildcard spot but even that isn’t a given going into seven of the toughest games they’ll play all year.
It is a measuring stick and a test for Dusty Baker’s team. They want to be in the thick of the race with the Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates and they are. Now though they have to prove they belong there by taking their best game out to the field against these two powerhouse teams. If they lose the majority of the games this week the result could be catastrophic to their chances of postseason play. However, if they step up and take both of these series it will put everyone on notice that the Reds are playing for keeps. It’s up to them to show what they’re made of.
