Things didn’t necessarily go perfectly the way Johnny Hellweg wanted earlier this season when he debuted in Major League Baseball. He is about to get another chance as the Milwaukee Brewers are changing and expanding their rosters for the September call-ups. Even though there are always bumps along the road for a young pitching prospect, Hellweg is the third highest prospect in the Brewers organization for a reason. He has a lot of potential and is about to get the big chance to show what he can do with it.
The numbers are mostly there for Hellweg. During his triple-A season Hellweg, who is 6’-9” and about 205 lbs, was good enough for a 3.16 ERA and a 11 – 5 record. Things would probably look even better for him if he didn’t struggle a little bit with control. His walks and strikeouts per game for the triple-A season are just about equal. That is something he’ll have to work on but he might as well work on it at the big league level.
This is the Brewers we are talking about here. They could use a phenomenal young pitcher to come along. I doubt Hellweg would be someone that could spring onto the scene like Miami Marlins’ Jose Fernandez has this season but he certainly is capable of making some noise in the rookie starter role during the 2014 season. As with all young player this time of year, his 2014 season is about to start at the beginning of September. The rest is up to him.
