St. Louis Cardinals Should Not Relax in First Place Ahead of Pirates

The way the St. Louis Cardinals have rallied behind themselves and hefted themselves back to the top of the National League Central division is nothing short of admirable and amazing. They seemed to be dying quickly with the loss of Yadier Molina and now they once again rest at the top of the division. What a great story that is but the Cardinals had better not get too proud of their comeback or they’ll have to make another one very quickly.

The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a few games after Starling Marte went down and the Cardinals took advantage to take the division lead back. They feel they are once again where they belong and maybe they are. One thing I know for sure however, is that the Pirates don’t particularly care where the Cardinals think they need to be. The Pirates have reloaded with a big trade for Marlon Byrd and John Buck formerly of the New York Mets. That is going to give the Pirates a boost.

Just being behind the Cardinals will give the Pirates a boost as well. The line-ups are not that different as far as potential now and the pitching staffs are similar as well in ability. These two teams are ready to fight it out until the end whether the Cincinnati Reds want to join in or not. The best thing the Cardinals can do right now is pretend they are still chasing someone. They have to play like they are six games back and not one or two games up to keep the Pirates behind them. It will not be easy.
