It seems like just a few years ago when Bruce Chen was one of the better young pitchers for the Atlanta Braves pitching staff. Like most young starters at the time he made a good four or five pitcher behind the legends o the staff. Since he left there and bounced from team to team for a long time, Chen has remained highly thought of which is why he always lands with a new team. His latest team has stuck with him for a while and the Kansas City Royals are reaping the benefits of that choice right now.
Chen’s ERA for the season is lower than any number he has ever honestly put up outside of the one game season here or there. With some starts and some bullpen work, he is versatile as well. There are few qualities not to like about this guy. He is a veteran presence that has the capability still to shut down another team and hold the Royals in a game from either position starter or reliever. How long they hold onto him is up to the Royals but I know what I would do.
If it were me running the team I would keep Chen on short term, high incentive deals. It seems that he responds fairly well to pressure and his veteran ability brings another bonus to the table. The Royals seem to be full of good pitchers that can take them possibly even into 2013 Postseason play but it won’t be easy. The things that Chen can do for them will give them a nice boost that should give them the best chance to squeak in.
