Colorado Rockies: Starting Pitching Going From Dreadful to Promising

The Colorado Rockies have been known for having an explosive offense with an inability to pitch. Pitching appeared to be the key for this franchise to find the postseason. The 2007 and 2009 seasons featured just enough pitching to accompany a strong offense.

In 2013, the starting rotation is showing prowess and strong potential going forward. The rotation is on track to feature three starters with an ERA under 4.00 for the first time in franchise history.

Jhoulys Chacin currently owns a 3.08 ERA following a seven-inning, one-hit gem. He is close to becoming the second Rockies starter to post a sub-3.00 ERA. Jorge De La Rosa owns a 3.33 ERA, and Tyler Chatwood owns a 3.15 ERA. Granted, Chatwood has only started 15 games this season, though he is starting tomorrow and will most likely have 5-6 more starts.

The Rockies also own a 4.18 team ERA, which currently trails the franchise record of 4.14 set in 2010. The Rockies already have two 10-plus game winners this season in Chacin and De La Rosa. Juan Nicasio has eight wins with 5-6 starts left, and Chatwood has seven wins. Both could potentially get to double figures in wins if they pitch effectively in September.

Four 10-plus game winners in the starting rotation would appear to be the key ingredient for a postseason berth, but lack of timely hitting and bullpen issues have been the downfall for 2013.

The back end of the rotation has also been the Achilles heel for this season, but the amazing turnaround in the starting rotation after a historically dreadful 2012 season is something to be excited about. Rockies fans are tired of hearing about potential for next season after hearing this phrase for the last few years, but I cant help but get excited for a formidable rotation to accompany a strong offense.

With Chad Bettis getting experience and 2013 first round pick Jonathan Gray speeding through the minors, pitching is looking up in the mile high city. Who needs the humidor?
