Boston Red Sox’ Minor League Affiliates Have Shown Great Success This Season

Boston Red Sox players will be getting plenty of playoff experience this year, and not just the ones chasing the division title at the big league level.

Of the seven minor league affiliates of the Red Sox, four have won their division, and the Lowell Spinners are a half game back with three games to go.

The youth of the Red Sox system is incredibly bright, as affiliates in both the Dominican Summer League and the Gulf Coast League won their divisions.  The oldest member of these two clubs is 21 years old, but the majority are still in their teenage years.

The High A Salem Red Sox have also won their division.  The star of the Salem club is without a doubt 20 year old second baseman Mookie Betts.  In his 50 games since being called up to Salem, Betts is hitting an incredible .337 and has flashed some decent power for a guy that stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs in at under 160-pounds.

Some September call-ups, such as Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brock Holt, won’t be with the big league club until a week or two into September.  The reason being, the Pawtucket Red Sox are going after their second straight International League title after recent trades for John McDonald and Quintin Berry allow the flexibility for the Red Sox to leave some talent on the AAA roster.

In the New York-Penn league, the Lowell Spinners are within a game of either the division title or wild card card berth.  This year’s second round draft pick, Teddy Stankiewicz, has really impressed in his limited innings.  He has only thrown 16.2 innings, but his ERA is just 1.08 with a K/BB ratio of 13/2.

The success in the minor league system speaks to the plethora of talent in the Red Sox system, and getting playoff experience, regardless of level, is always a benefit in development.
