Kansas City Royals’ Playoff Hopes Still Alive Thanks to Rays Losses
It is a good thing that the Kansas City Royals have collectively strong stomachs because they have been on the most ridiculous roller-coaster ride this year. No team has been in first place and as close to last place in the same season as the Royals have. They have made changes including releasing players that some figured they probably wouldn’t release and signing players they probably wouldn’t have signed in some opinions. For all they have done, they are still just barely in the wildcard playoff picture.
They have the Tampa Bay Rays to thank for that fact. The Rays have lost a lot of games over the past week and the American League wildcard race is substantially tighter because of it. A race that just a few weeks ago looked to be out of the Royals’ reach is now once again within their grasp but the issue at hand for them will be the same as it has been all season. They need a hot streak that last longer than one week and isn’t followed by a cold streak.
It would be better as a matter of fact if they didn’t even go on a winning streak if they are only going to fall apart afterwards. Winning every series from this point forward would probably get them right there with a chance to win during the last week of the season. Their pitching staff is as solid as anyone else in the race. Going into play today they were 4.5 games out. They need help from other teams to falter a little more but if they can win series from here on out, the Royals could make things very interesting.
