Tampa Bay Rays Barely Clinging to Slim Wildcard Position

There once was a song that had the lyric “You picked a fine time to leave me…” and on it went. For the Tampa Bay Rays that would be “You picked a fine time to lose…”. The recent losing streak of the Rays has tightened up the American League playoff race like they only could have had nightmares about. Where they once were comfortable in the wildcard race and chasing the Boston Red Sox for the division lead, now they are barely clinging to the wildcard with the New York Yankees chomping at their heels.

This week has the power to right some of the wrongs done to the Rays during the losing trend. Going into play on Thursday night they looked capable of taking three of four from the Los Angeles Angels and should hope to take the coming series against the Seattle Mariners as well. If they do then they can hold off the charging Yankees as well as the other few teams that are getting closer to their coveted second wildcard slot.

Pitching and hitting altogether and everything that goes with them are what needs to be better. Things have looked better all around this week. If the Rays get things straightened out against the teams they should beat up on like they appear to be doing this week, they might not have to stress so badly about playing teams like the Baltimore Orioles, Red Sox and Yankees. All of those series will fill the month of September so the Rays should fix their issues against the teams they should beat.
