San Diego Padres: 2013 A Lost Year For Cameron Maybin

The 2013 season hasn’t been too kind to the San Diego Padres. They’ll head into this final stretch of games missing out on the playoffs yet again, with injuries playing their part in derailing a season that already featured relatively low expectations.

The Padres have seen key offensive players, including the likes of Carlos Quentin and Kyle Blanks, miss time, with Quentin missing significant time and already having been shut down, spend time on the disabled list. Jedd Gyorko has seen his first year negatively impacted by injury.

Also in the injury mix is Cameron Maybin. The outfielder, who looked like he had revived his career since joining the Padres in 2011, took a step back after a career year in that first season. Looking to rebound this year, Maybin has found himself in a lost season.

The 2013 season will go down as one that essentially never happened for Maybin, for all intents and purposes. He has managed to appear in only 14 games, with knee and wrist issues consuming him this year. It was announced earlier this week that he’ll miss the remainder of the year after undergoing wrist surgery.

It remains to be seen whether or not those wrist issues will linger for Maybin moving forward, but it definitely has to be a cause for concern for San Diego. At least he’s taking care of it now, rather than playing through the rest of the year and chancing those issues carrying over into 2014.

Whether or not Maybin will be able to rebound remains to be seen. He hasn’t proven to be the star that his status as a top prospect might have indicated, but he’s a good defender in the outfield, and a nightmare on the basepaths. If he can rebound from this, he’s a building block for the Pads. Right now, though, the story is about the 2013 season that basically never happened for him.
