Searching for a starting pitcher that is not only good but also has the potential to be great or even the ace of a starting staff is not an easy task to undertake. The Houston Astros are going out of 2013 and into 2014 without knowledge of how their pitching staff will really shape up. Unlike this past spring training when they just had no idea what they would have, next year it will be narrowing down the good pitchers they have to find the diamonds in the rough. It appears they have found one of their guys in starter Brett Oberholtzer.
Oberholtzer isn’t getting a ton of media attention because first of all he doesn’t get a ton of wins thanks to his team not being that good and secondly because his team isn’t that good. That doesn’t change the fact that he has been that good and even better. Over seven starts made this season he has only given up more than 2 runs on two occasions. Those were only a 3 and 4 run game at that.
He is probably someone who can quickly grow into ace caliber for the Astros. I believe that Lucas Harrell will work his way back into the starting rotation by the time next season comes along but he still might find himself slotted behind the very successful Oberholtzer in the starting order. If he continues to pitch as consistently as he has in the past couple of months, there is no doubt that will be the result.
