New York Yankees Playoff Chances Dimmed Because of Key Injuries

The igniting of the New York Yankees has been one of the best stories of the later part of the 2013 MLB season. They have gone from basically out of contention to one of the few leading contenders for a wildcard spot in the American League. That journey has taken a bit of a lump or two however thanks to injuries to a few key players. Have the injuries that the Yankees suffered crippled their chance to win the wildcard spot they so badly crave?

That is a really good question that is difficult to answer. Though Derek Jeter’s ankle problem turned out good result upon further testing, the continued problems the Captain is having with nagging injuries keep him from his full ability. That isn’t the biggest issue right now though. The Yankees are finding ways to score runs with or without Jeter. The biggest area of key injuries is in the bullpen.

They have lost not one, not two but three key men to injuries that are unavailable right now. Thanks to that Joe Girardi has to piece together the best bullpen he can find and it is not working out too well. They are still within three games of the second A.L. wildcard berth so they are certainly not out of the race. Being third in the charge behind the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians won’t really help but they are in it. If they plan to have enough ability despite injuries to win, they’ll need to show a much improved bullpen very soon. Otherwise this might not be their year.
