The Royals have had success against Verlander in recent games, and picked on him again Saturday night in a 4-3 victory. Perez crushed the big blow, a two-out home run that gave the Royals a 4-2 lead.
It was Perez’s 11th home run of the season, and one of his biggest. The Royals were coming off a 16-2 whipping from the Tigers the previous night and Verlander, who has struggled throughout the season, was coming off a strong performance earlier in the week against the Cleveland Indians.
But it would be Salvador Perez’s night. His home run helped the Royals win for the 10th time in their last 14 games and keep their hopes alive in the AL Wild Card chase.
Perez continues to have a solid bat for the Royals, and it needs to stay that way. The Royals can’t afford to lose any more games to stay in the playoff hunt, and they’ll continue to rely on sluggers like Perez to come up with the key hit. With 11 homers, he hasn’t been clearing the fence that often this season, but picked a fine time to do it Saturday.
With 20 games to play, the Royals trail Detroit by eight games for first place in the AL Central, which is probably too big of a hill for Kansas City to overcome. They still have time to go after a Wild Card spot and are giving Perez even more incentive to end the season with a hot bat.
