The way Monday’s game started for the Detroit Tigers sums up the way September has gone for them so far. Miguel Cabrera and Jim Leyland were both thrown out of the game in the first inning when the umpire made a very questionable (read as ‘wrong’) call on a check swing. Miggy checked his swing and was hit by the ball but the home plate umpire, without asking for help from the first base umpire, called it a strike. That is just about right for how the Tigers have played this month.
Even Max Scherzer can’t get things going in the month of September as he lost his second decision in a row, giving up five runs over four innings. Basically this is another case of a great team stumbling through the season’s final month. The Tigers went into play on Monday having lost 5 of 7 this month and then started out the game with their ace on the mound like that. I think most of the Tigers could probably be seen with a look on their face that screamed, ‘that figures’.
They do not have the largest lead in MLB so while they have room to play with, they do not have a ton of room to allow a collapse. Chances are they will pick themselves up within the next week and reel off enough wins to put away the division. For now though as they continue to struggle, it has got to be tough to watch. Plus it might, just might cost Cabrera the chance at a triple crown.
