Now four games back in the Wild Card race with 18 left to play, the Kansas City Royals are running out of time. They are almost to the point where winning out will be their only hope. The Royals are trailing four teams for the last Wild Card spot, and hoping for a collapse from that many teams is unrealistic. A break down from the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers is also a stretch, as KC is the only winning team they have left on their schedule.
Kansas City is one of the streakiest teams in the league and they need to make a big run right now. Every loss from here on out is a crushing blow to their slim playoff hopes. The desperation level makes it almost as if they’re in the playoffs already, and that’s how the Royals need to take it. Every game should be viewed as do or die, and it starts with the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.
The Indians are one of the teams the Royals are trying to run down and if KC can take the final two games of their series, they’ll be just half a game behind them. But even if the Royals can steal the next two from Cleveland, they still have their work cut out for them, because the schedule doesn’t get any easier. Their next three series’ are against the Tigers, the Indians again, and then the Texas Rangers.
It’s not over yet, but desperation mode is definitely here. The Royals can’t count on any help from other teams. If they want to make the playoffs for the first time since 1985, they need to take matters in their own hands and start a winning streak immediately.
