There’s no doubt that the New York Mets are big winners in their trade with the Toronto Blue Jays last winter that involved reigning NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey, but with the shape of the Mets’ starting rotation these days, they’re certainly feeling the absence of Dickey and the short-term sacrifices they made as a result of that trade.
If there’s one thing Dickey did for the Mets last season, aside from being the team’s ace and being the best pitcher in the NL, it was eat up innings, throwing over 233 innings for the Mets in 2012.
Losing all the innings that Dickey pitched last season, in addition to the 20 wins he had, was a subtle drawback of trading away Dickey during the offseason, and the Mets are feeling the effect of not having an innings-eater like Dickey on their staff right now.
Even before the rash of season-ending injuries to starters Jeremy Hefner, Jenrry Mejia and Matt Harvey, the Mets were in need of an innings eater, as they intended to limit the innings of both Harvey and Zack Wheeler.
Not only have the injuries to their rotation hurt, but the Mets have played an inordinate number of extra-inning games this season, which has taxed a bullpen that was already wearing thin and put even more pressure on the starters to eat up innings. Unfortunately, the Mets don’t have the type of starters that can go deep in games on a regular basis, especially now that Harvey is out for the season.
Now that half of their starting rotation from a month ago is gone, that has become an even bigger concern — a problem that has come about in part due to the absence of Dickey from their starting rotation this season. But when they traded Dickey away, they knew they would have to make sacrifices now with the hope of big rewards in the future, and right now, the Mets are feeling the effects of those sacrifices big time.
