The Baltimore Orioles are only one game out of the second wildcard slot in the American League. That means more than anything that every single American League playoff team should pay attention to preparing for them. If Chris Davis and the very solid Orioles climb into that playoff spot, they are going to be a gigantic handful for someone to hope to defeat. That includes them being a handful for the team that ranks first in most MLB Power Rankings, the Boston Red Sox.
Sure, it looked bleak a few weeks ago especially with their record being tough. I mean they had to play the Red Sox for a three-game series right here in the most important part of the season. How unlucky can they get? Oh wait, they won the first two games of the series and have a decent chance to sweep the team widely considered to be the best in all of baseball. What does that tell you? It doesn’t mean the Sox are taking it easy on them, I can tell you that. If anyone wants the O’s to miss the playoffs, it is the Red Sox.
The Red Sox are losing the season series 9 – 6 to the Orioles going into play on Thursday night. This is a good offensive team and some say one of the greatest defensive teams in recent history. Only their starting pitching and bullpen could possibly hold them back. When the pitching joins the other two components and is clicking, they are very difficult to beat. Just ask the Red Sox if you don’t believe that. Because the Orioles face the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend, they really have their best chance right now to overtake one of those spots. We’ll see if they keep the momentum or give it away.
