New York Yankees Hanging on But Need Help to Grab Wildcard Spot
What an odd season the 2013 Major League Baseball season has been for the New York Yankees. They were not that good for a lot of the season but had several players hurt. Then everyone gets healthy and gets hurt again. When everyone is healthy they still are way out of the playoff hunt until their most hated player gets plunked on purpose. Then they went and became the favorites to overtake a wildcard spot just a week ago. Now they are on the outside looking in as they have fallen 2.5 back and behind a slew of teams.
Whew, I’m exhausted just typing it. What a strange year. As far as the 2013 playoff picture goes, the Yankees are not out of it by a long shot. Any time a team is that close they have a chance. The problem they run into is that the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals are all in a better position than they are. Add those teams to whichever team currently holding a wildcard spot would need to falter and you have four teams the Yankees need to slump over the next week.
Luckily that isn’t unheard of but unluckily some of those teams play each other. Probably the best chance the Yankees have other than winning out is to try and sweep the Tampa Bay Rays when they come calling and hope everyone else loses those games as well. For the most part, it is a long shot at best. Honestly though, stranger things have happened. For a season when everything is crazy however, it is at least refreshing to see the excellence of Mariano Rivera celebrated everywhere he goes. He well deserves it since even now he would be the most dangerous part of this team if they happened to sneak into the postseason.
