Miami Marlins Scratch Out Wildcard Killing Victory Over Hot Nationals

Much has been written about the Washington Nationals pursuit of the National League wildcard spot that looked way out of their reach just a month ago. They have been the hottest and best playing team in all of Major League Baseball. On Sunday they had to try and sweep the Miami Marlins in a double-header and take momentum into the final week of the season. That didn’t happen however thanks to the hard fighting Marlins.

The Marlins won just one game of their series against the Nationals but they made the Nationals fight hard the second game of the double-header on Sunday. I believe such a performance should boost the pride of the Marlins. Their last place season is something that they plan to try and do better on next season but they surely couldn’t have been sad to see the fact that the one win they scratched out against the tough Nationals probably ended their wildcard dreams for the 2013 season.

The Nats’ elimination number was four coming into Sunday but with a Cincinnati Reds win and the defeat they took at the Marlins’ hands that number is down to 2. Thanks to the Marlins, the Nats would now need to hope the Reds or Pittsburgh Pirates only one a single game for the rest of the season. This off-season the Marlins will not be talked about a lot outside of Miami but I hope more than a few people remember their tough fighting ways. This kind of play is what made them difficult to sweep down the stretch and it will make them stronger in 2014.
