The Kansas City Royals can pull within 3.0 games of the Cleveland Indians with a win on Monday or fall to 4.0 games out for the final wildcard spot. Either way their 2013 MLB postseason chances are a long shot at best. That isn’t what the Royals are so much focused on right now however; at least not those in the front office. Even the fans are excited in the simple idea that they are guaranteed a winning season for the first time in a long time.
All of the moves that were made during the 2012 offseason have had the desired effect in that the Royals have contended for a playoff spot. It would take a drastic fall for them to capture it but the fact that they even have a chance in the final week of the season speaks volumes for what progress has been made by this team. The franchise is also moving in the right direction with plus prospects beginning to show themselves MLB worthy during spot starts here and there.
James Shields will probably have his team option grabbed up while one or two other starters from this season’s stellar staff might move on. Also while the core offensive players will probably return there could be some changeover in other spots. Whatever spending and moving occurs this offseason; the Royals have one good season of good moves to build on now. They are doing this the right way to get quick results and if they play their moves in the right way this coming winter, they could be competing even better this time next season.
