Rockies’ Tyler Chatwood Dominating Boston Red Sox is No Surprise

Watching the Colorado Rockies manhandle the American League Eastern champion Boston Red Sox is pretty surprising for most Major League Baseball fans I would assume. It shouldn’t be too surprising that the Red Sox were unable to score runs off of Tyler Chatwood of the Rockies on Tuesday night however. For a team that has been less than great all season long, Chatwood has been one of the big bright spots.

We aren’t even going to look at his ERA right now because the few bad starts he had were very bad which skews the ERA number quite a bit. Instead we are going to look at the starts he made and how many were extremely good just like the one on Tuesday against the American League’s best team.

First of all it would probably be eye-opening to non-Rockies fans that Chatwood has given up 2 or fewer runs in 16 of his 20 starts this season. The seven scoreless he threw against the Red Sox was the third time this season he has given up zero earned runs. The vast majority of his starts have been quality and then some. He can beat the Red Sox and any of their stellar starting pitchers when he is having a good day and most of his days are good.

At least when we see things like this it makes me hope we won’t see quite as much shock and surprise next season when Chatwood continues to progress into a dominant young starting pitcher for the Rockies. He is well on his way there right now.
